NVIDIA App overlay and Instant Replay vs in-game stutter
NVIDIA App (and legacy GeForce Experience) can inject In-Game Overlay and Instant Replay into the frame pipeline. That is separate from the Game Ready driver. Turn overlay and background recording off in NVIDIA App settings, restart the game, and test one scene. Then Discord overlay and Xbox Game Bar. SmoothWizard does not hook frames - it is a Windows app with power plan (Basic) and process pause (PRO).
Shift+Z and Instant Replay run on every frame even when you never open the menu. The driver can be fresh while frametime still wobbles from the overlay layer.
Why it stutters
The NVIDIA overlay registers hotkeys, on-screen stats, and an Instant Replay buffer beside the game render. Each extra layer adds another sync point with the GPU. In CS2, Valorant, or Fortnite, micro-stutter often clears only after the overlay goes off, not after another driver update. Reflex in the game menu is not the overlay. 3D panel Low Latency is not GeForce overlay either.
Key points
- NVIDIA In-Game Overlay and Instant Replay off first, then Discord and Game Bar.
- Keep the Game Ready driver. You disable the UI layer, not the GPU stack.
- SmoothWizard is not an overlay. Clear shader cache from the tray when a patch needs it.
- 1
NVIDIA App: disable In-Game Overlay
Open NVIDIA App. Settings (gear) > Features or General > In-Game Overlay off. Legacy GeForce Experience: Settings > General > In-Game Overlay. Close the game before changing, then relaunch.
- 2
Instant Replay and background capture
In the same area turn Instant Replay, Record, or Background recording off. The buffer keeps sampling frames even with the overlay menu closed. For ranked testing, all of it off.
- 3
One scene before the next tweak
Same warmup: range, DM, or training. NVIDIA overlay off only. If you can, do not stack shader cache clear and HAGS the same day. Judge frametime locally.
- 4
Discord overlay and Steam
Discord: User Settings > Overlay > Enable Overlay off. Steam: Settings > In-Game > Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game off, or per game in Properties. NVIDIA is often first, but three overlays at once is guessing again.
- 5
Xbox Game Bar and Captures
Settings > Gaming > Game Bar off or disable shortcuts. Settings > Gaming > Captures: Record what happened off. Game Bar has its own guide. Here it is the step after NVIDIA in the overlay checklist.

SmoothWizard
Basic: power plan. PRO: pause chosen processes when the game covers the monitor. The app does not inject into the game process or replace turning NVIDIA overlay off. Clean shader cache lives in the tray when a patch needs cache.
Notes
NVIDIA App replaces GeForce Experience on many PCs. Labels: In-Game Overlay, Instant Replay. Alt+Z opens overlay only when enabled.
FAQ
Click a question to show the answer. The first one is open.
Do I need to uninstall NVIDIA App?
No. Disable overlay and Instant Replay. You still update the Game Ready driver via App or nvidia.com. Uninstalling App is not the first stutter step.
Is NVIDIA Reflex the overlay?
No. Reflex is a video option in the game (e.g. CS2). Overlay is Shift+Z, stats, and Replay. Turn those off separately.
Overlay off but the game still hitches.
Check Discord, Steam, Game Bar, and shader cache after a patch. One overlay is enough to hurt 1% lows. On AMD, check Adrenalin overlay instead of NVIDIA.
Does SmoothWizard replace disabling overlay?
No. It is not an overlay. It can set a power plan and optionally pause background processes (PRO). You still disable NVIDIA overlay in NVIDIA App.
Does borderless help?
Exclusive fullscreen makes overlay hooks harder but does not always disable them. Still turn In-Game Overlay off in App. Window mode is covered in per-game guides.
