Windows Game Mode and HAGS: Game Mode on, HAGS as a test
On Windows 10 and 11, Game Mode is Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. It is a game priority, not an FPS booster. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) is Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. Turn HAGS on or off and test on your PC after a reboot. There is no one true setting for every GPU. SmoothWizard does not touch Game Mode or HAGS.
Two Microsoft toggles, two tests. Game Mode stays on. HAGS is not a forum vote - you check it after a reboot.
Why it stutters
Game Mode trims some background work while a game is focused. HAGS moves some GPU scheduling closer to the driver. That is why HAGS can smooth a frame or add micro-stutter, GPU and Windows build depending. No borrowed FPS.
Key points
- Game Mode: On. Not a magic booster.
- HAGS: one On run, one Off run, after reboot.
- SmoothWizard does not click these for you.
- 1
Turn Game Mode on
Win+I > Gaming > Game Mode. Enable it. On older builds the page sits near Xbox Game Bar. Do not confuse it with Captures.
- 2
Do not start with Game Bar
Game Bar and Captures are overlay. Separate guide. If Win+G hits mid-round, kill Captures first.
- 3
Find HAGS
Settings > System > Display > Graphics, then Change default graphics settings. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. If the toggle is missing, your GPU or build does not show it. No registry hunt.
- 4
One On test, one Off test
HAGS needs a reboot. Same warmup: smokes, peeks, second monitor off. Keep the side where your frame is even.
- 5
Do not stack three overlays
Discord, Steam, NVIDIA off, then HAGS. Otherwise you are guessing.
- 6
SmoothWizard
Basic: power plan. PRO: process pause on fullscreen. The app does not toggle Game Mode or HAGS.
Notes
Windows labels stay English here. A Polish Windows SKU may show Tryb gry and Planowanie GPU z przyspieszeniem sprzętowym. Same switches.
FAQ
Click a question to show the answer. The first one is open.
Does Game Mode always help?
Microsoft presents it as a game mode. We do not promise frames. If a background app still hammers the disk, Game Mode will not replace the overlay and power checklist.
Should HAGS always be on?
No. One GPU likes it, another gets micro-stutter. On and Off after reboot. No internet default.
Will SmoothWizard enable Game Mode?
No. Windows switch. The app does power plan (Basic) and process pause (PRO).
Is this Xbox Game Bar?
No. Game Bar is overlay and Captures. Game Mode is game priority. HAGS is GPU scheduling.
