NVIDIA drivers for gaming: Game Ready and when to clean
For Windows games, use Game Ready Drivers from nvidia.com or the NVIDIA App. Keep Studio Driver for creator work. After weird crashes or a black screen after an update, use Custom → Clean installation. Turn GeForce / NVIDIA App overlay off separately from the driver. Use DDU only when a normal uninstall fails. SmoothWizard does not install the GPU driver. Clear shader cache from the tray after a big driver update.
A bad driver hurts the frame like an overlay. Official Game Ready first, overlay second, booster last.
Why it stutters
Game Ready tracks new titles and patches. Studio targets creator stability. Clean installation wipes old 3D profiles and often ends the post-update stutter fight. Overlay is a separate process - do not confuse it with the driver. DDU is a Safe Mode recovery tool, not a weekly ritual.
Key points
- Source: nvidia.com / NVIDIA App. No random forum driver packs.
- Games: Game Ready. Studio only when you actually edit or render.
- Clean installation after crashes or a black screen post-update.
- Overlay and Instant Replay are separate - see the CS2 overlay guide.
- SmoothWizard does not install the driver. Power plan is Basic. Process pause is PRO.
- 1
Download Game Ready from an official source
Use nvidia.com/Download or NVIDIA App → Drivers. Pick your GPU and Windows. For CS2, Valorant, Fortnite and most games: Game Ready. Leave Studio for video edit / render workloads - not as a forum myth safer gaming driver.
- 2
Express install when things are fine
Express is enough for a calm update. Reboot. Run one known scene (warmup, Range). Do not stack a driver update with three new overlays the same day.
- 3
Clean installation after crashes or a black screen
Installer: Custom (Advanced) → Perform a clean installation. That clears old 3D panel settings. After reboot, re-apply Low Latency / per-game prefs. Do not paste someone else's FPS as proof you needed Clean.
- 4
DDU only when uninstall fails
If Clean still leaves artifacts, BSOD, or a broken installer: Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode, then fresh Game Ready from nvidia.com. Last resort, not a weekly habit. Have a restore point or a way back.
- 5
Turn overlay off separately
The driver can be fine while Instant Replay and GeForce Overlay still hitch CS2. Disable overlay in NVIDIA App / Experience. Separate guide: Steam and NVIDIA overlay. In-game Reflex is not the overlay.
- 6
SmoothWizard after a driver update
Tray: Clean shader cache (NVIDIA). Basic: power plan. PRO: process pause on fullscreen. The app does not install or roll back the GPU driver. Do not run a second driver booster beside it.
Notes
Installer labels stay in English (Clean installation, Game Ready) as shown in NVIDIA's UI.
FAQ

Game Ready or Studio for CS2?
For games: Game Ready. Use Studio when edit/render stability is the priority, not ranked matches.
Do I need DDU every update?
No. Try a normal update or Clean installation first. DDU is for when that fails.
Does SmoothWizard install the NVIDIA driver?
No. It can clear shader cache and set a power plan (Basic) or pause processes (PRO).
Is the overlay the same as the driver?
No. The driver renders. GeForce / Instant Replay overlay is a separate process. Turn it off on its own.
